Хом'як постійно чухається: коли це нормально, а коли слід звернутися до ветеринара

Hamster constantly scratches: when is it normal and when should you contact a veterinarian?

Why might a hamster scratch a lot: habits or health problems?

Frequent scratching in hamsters is not always a sign of illness – it is mostly the result of natural behavior.

Studies show that in the wild, rodents constantly groom their fur to get rid of odors that can attract predators. In the home, this instinct persists, and your hamster may actively scratch, lick, or rub against the cage, especially after cleaning. It also helps it to “freshen” its scent and mark its territory.

In addition, a reaction to odors can be the cause of frequent scratching. Your hamster may begin to actively clean itself after you pick it up. This is a normal process, as the animal is trying to get rid of a foreign odor. If the hamster remains active, eats well, and has no visible skin lesions, then there is no reason for concern.

However, it is worth paying attention to whether scratching is not a sign of concern. If the animal begins to scratch frequently, becomes lethargic, refuses to eat or wounds appear on the skin, this is a signal to immediately consult a veterinarian. The condition of the fur is also important: if it looks unkempt, dull or falls out, this may indicate health problems.

Possible causes of scratching can be diverse – from parasites and fungal infections to allergies or vitamin deficiencies. Determining the exact problem yourself can be difficult.

We recommend that you monitor your pet’s health and consult a veterinarian if you have any doubts about its well-being.
