Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of tomatoes: prices have jumped to record levels

Last week, Ukraine experienced a serious shortage of greenhouse tomatoes, which led to a significant increase in their prices.

Experts from EastFruit note that the main reason for this phenomenon is the reduction in imports, in particular from Turkey. The lack of sufficient goods on the shelves allows importers to raise prices for leftover products.

Today, the cost of a kilogram of greenhouse tomatoes fluctuates between 120-140 UAH (approximately $ 3), which is 10% more expensive compared to the week before last. In annual terms, prices for imported tomatoes have increased by 45%.

Earlier this month, wholesalers and importers tried to sell existing stocks, but new deliveries arrived in limited quantities, as a result of which the shortage only worsened.

According to FAO, Ukraine is among the 15 countries with the highest food inflation, exceeding the global average of 3.2%. Ukrainian families are already feeling the economic burden, and the overall increase in food prices in 2026 could reach 9.2%.

While some regions try to control prices, Ukrainians should be prepared for new surprises in supermarkets.
