Peace talks have not yet begun: what are the predictions for the end of the war?
Despite the ongoing peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, the war is unlikely to end anytime soon. Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko commented that, while negotiations will undoubtedly continue, the parties are not yet close to a real peace agreement.
The expert believes that even if diplomatic contacts continue in the coming months, by the fall or, possibly, by the end of the year, the signing of agreements to end the conflict is unlikely. He also noted that although unexpected scenarios may arise in international politics, the current dynamics do not give grounds for optimism.
Fesenko emphasized that it is impossible to accurately predict the date of the end of the war, since such conflicts are often characterized by unpredictability, and their consequences depend on many military, political and international factors.
He emphasized that making forecasts for 2027-2028 is extremely difficult. The political scientist believes that a war of attrition negatively affects both sides, so a prolonged conflict will lead to serious consequences.
According to Fesenko, a real chance for the results of the negotiations will appear when the situation on the front changes, in particular, when the combat situation is stabilized and the Russian offensive is stopped. He noted that if Ukraine manages to stop the progress of the Russian army, in particular through the introduction of new technologies, peace talks may become inevitable. According to his forecasts, more specific agreements may be discussed at the end of 2023 or in 2027-2028.
Earlier it was reported that Russia launched a large-scale spring offensive, which caused fears on the front.
