Звільнення штучного інтелекту: власники GTA 6 несподівано усунули головного розробника AI-технологій

Unleashing artificial intelligence: GTA 6 owners unexpectedly removed the main developer of AI technologies

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of such well-known brands as Rockstar Games and 2K, has abruptly cut its artificial intelligence department. This decision seems especially strange, given the previous promises of the management to actively use neural networks in the development of future games, in particular the expected GTA 6. Why specialists who have worked for many years on the development of innovative technologies have found themselves out of work right now – let’s try to figure it out.

The first to report on the cuts was the former head of Take-Two’s artificial intelligence department, Luke Dicken, on his LinkedIn page, confirming that his time at the company was over. Dicken not only managed, but also led the development of innovative solutions for seven years, first at Zynga, and later at Take-Two. Along with him, other key specialists lost their positions, including the director of research in the field of artificial intelligence. Luke is now calling on the community to support his talented colleagues in finding new work, which is a difficult task in the gaming industry today.

The question arises because a few months ago, the company’s CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed great optimism about the possibilities of neural networks. He assured investors that the company is implementing hundreds of pilot projects using AI to “optimize routine tasks and enable creators to create masterpieces.”

Zelnick also assured that these technologies will help reduce costs and increase efficiency. However, now a paradoxical situation is emerging: a company that publicly “supports” AI is simultaneously laying off leading specialists in this field.

Interestingly, Zelnick’s position was more cautious earlier: he emphasized that the “creative genius” of Rockstar and 2K games will always be human. He even noted the importance of protecting and paying people, despite attempts to automate processes.

It is likely that the dismissal of Dicken’s team indicates that Take-Two decided that its own development has become too expensive, and prefers to use commercially available AI tools instead of maintaining a team of researchers.

Fans waiting for GTA 6 or new parts of Borderlands and BioShock may wonder about the possible consequences of such changes for the quality of the games. If the department that dealt with advanced technology has been eliminated, does this mean that ambitious plans for a living game world and intelligent NPCs can be simplified?

At the moment, Take-Two has not provided any comments on the reasons for these changes, but it is clear that the path to introducing AI into the gaming sector has turned out to be more difficult and expensive than it was shown during the presentations.
