Space dreams or waste: stars criticize the flight of the female Blue Origin crew
The launch of Blue Origin’s all-female crew caused a wide response among celebrities and social media users. The participants were singer Katy Perry, journalists Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez, astronaut Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and producer Caryanne Flynn. The flight lasted 11 minutes, including 4 minutes in zero gravity.
Actress Olivia Munn was the first to express her opinion on the Today Show with Jenna and Friends: “There are many more important things to do in the world. This flight looks like a luxury against the backdrop of poverty. People can’t afford to buy eggs, and they are going into space here.”
Mann emphasized that space missions should serve science, not entertainment: “What is the purpose of this journey? How can it help us here on Earth?”
Also criticized was stand-up comedian Amy Schumer, who posted an ironic video on Instagram on the day of the launch, joking that she had joined the crew “at the last minute.” In the video, she held a toy Black Panther and claimed she was going to space with it “just because it was in her bag.”
Actress Olivia Wilde also did not stand aside, writing on social media, “Looks like we got some pretty good memes for a billion dollars.” She accompanied her post with an image of Katy Perry kissing the ground upon her return.
Model and actress Emily Ratakowski characterized the mission as “the ultimate event” and “a travesty.” She expressed doubts about the flight’s environmental aspects: “This vehicle was created by a company that is actively harming the planet. I can’t take it any other way than with indignation.”
Social media users also actively discussed the event, highlighting its demonstrative nature and lack of scientific purpose. One comment on Twitter read: “Katy Perry and a few other women went to space for no reason other than to spend money and show off.”
Many, despite the mission’s promised ” historicity,” consider it a mere PR stunt. Critics argue that entertainment flights look at least inappropriate when the world faces wars, poverty, and environmental problems.
