In Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained demonstrators against the Sunny Bunny queer festival
In Kyiv, at the Oktyabr cinema, there was a conflict between the police and the Right Youth organization members protesting against the Sunny Bunny LGBTQ+ film festival. As a result of the protests, the activists were detained.
The skirmish took place at the “Oktyabr” cinema, where representatives of the “Right Youth” opposed the next Sunny Bunny queer film festival. As “Suspilne” reports, all the protesters were detained. Employees of law enforcement agencies said that the detentions were necessary for “checking documents.”
Sunny Bunny is the first queer film festival in Ukraine, which will be held from April 18 to 25. The purpose of the festival is to support the LGBTQ+ community, develop inclusiveness, and promote the principles of equality.
Some citizens noted that the dates of the festival coincide with the celebration of Easter, which gave rise to public discussions about the appropriateness of holding the event at this time.
The organizers clarified that the dates were determined in advance by the international festival calendar, a common practice in the cultural environment.
The organizers’ statement emphasizes that the coincidence with Easter is accidental and was not intended to offend believers. They also remind us that Ukraine is a secular state, and various events can be held on any day, regardless of religious holidays.
