Migrants’ confidential information fell into the hands of Doge: experts sound the alarm

The US Department of State Efficiency (Doge), headed by businessman Elon Musk, has gained access to the closed government database ECAS, which contains confidential data on millions of migrants.

According to The Washington Post, this is a US Department of Justice database that stores personal data, such as the names, addresses, and life histories of individuals, their lawyers, and their interactions with law enforcement agencies. It is important to note that some of this information is confidential, and its disclosure could threaten the safety of individuals.

A group of six Doge advisers received access to ECAS after approval by senior Justice Department officials. The employees have already been tasked with preparing reports based on the new data. Moreover, representatives of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, which works with Doge, recently requested data from the Medicare database, including personal medical information.

At the same time, Doge units are engaged in evicting migrants from public housing, including families where some members have legal immigration status and others do not. This is part of a strategy aimed at limiting the access of illegal immigrants to government programs.

Such actions concern human rights activists. Lynn Damiano Pearson, a senior attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, said that using confidential ECAS information for purposes unrelated to data protection threatens the security of citizens and foreigners in the United States.

The administration of Donald Trump, which is cooperating with Doge, is working to collect data on the place of work, residence, and education of government employees, which could lead to pressure on illegal immigrants.
