Some Dutch people may be relatives: reproductive clinics have not followed the rules for years
A serious problem in the Netherlands, the field of reproductive medicine, has been uncovered, as reported by The Guardian. It was found that more than 85 sperm donors have fathered more than 25 children each, putting them at risk of inbreeding and genetic abnormalities.
According to current regulations, one donor cannot father more than 25 children. However, the facts show that clinics systematically ignore these rules, allowing donors to donate sperm multiple times, sometimes to different medical institutions at the same time.
The investigation found that:
- donors were used more than 25 times;
- clinics exchanged samples without proper documentation;
- there is no centralized system for monitoring the number of children from one donor.
This poses serious genetic risks, as many children conceived with the help of these donors do not even know how many biological brothers and sisters they have.
For decades, such individuals can irresponsibly build relationships with siblings, which increases the likelihood of hereditary diseases and mutations in subsequent generations. The medical community has already described the situation as a “medical catastrophe” and is calling for urgent changes to the donor registration system.
After the information was published in the Netherlands, a public outcry erupted. Parents who have trusted the clinics for years are demanding investigations and punishment. Some of the affected families are already preparing lawsuits.
The state is considering the possibility of creating a single donor registry, as well as introducing mandatory registration of all children conceived with the help of donor sperm. Considering the ethical, medical and legal consequences of long-term negligence, a situation that was supposed to bring happiness to families has turned into a systemic problem that the Netherlands now needs to deal with.
