On May 26, Orthodox Christians honor the apostles from the 70s, Carp and Alpheus, according to the updated church calendar. This day also marks the restoration of the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral in Kyiv.

This holiday became known among the people as Carp Day since it is believed that Saint Carp brings good luck to fishermen.

Ancient Ukrainians believed that fish with the same names were caught very well on Carp – hence the origin of the holiday “Karpolov.” Traditionally, on this day, men went fishing, hoping for a good catch.

This day is ideal for fishing, and before going to the reservoir, fishermen pray to Saint Carp for good luck. After the prayer, it is customary to throw treats for fish and other water creatures. This tradition has deep roots, as animal sacrifices were previously used in the ritual. Having caught a carp, it is believed that this is a significant sign that portends good luck. This fish is often referred to as the “water fox” due to its caution and endurance.

In Russia, it was believed that near blooming rosehips, people tried to eliminate unpleasant odors; for this purpose, pots and dishes were placed to catch the scent. People can still gather near the rosehip because it is believed to help ward off diseases. Those who suffer from weight problems can also benefit from inhaling the aroma of rosehip – according to popular belief, this helps to gain weight.

On this day, you should also call a specialist to inspect the stove. You should treat him with a loaf of bread and pay an adequate amount so that next year you will not have problems with luck. It is also essential to treat the brownie that lives behind the stove because a good attitude towards him will provide protection and supervision over the house.

Girls had their ritual – to prepare “magic milk,” they brought morning milk under the rosehip, where, according to legend, it was supposed to gain strength and help in love.

What not to do on May 26

The Church, as on other days, warns against slander, insults, gossip, and envy. On this day, one should not refuse to help those who ask for assistance.

According to folk signs, one should not be lazy on this day; if one sleeps for a long time, one can miss one’s luck. Additionally, cleaning and disposing of garbage after sunset is considered inauspicious, as it can bring bad luck. It is believed that today, one should not eat any fish other than Carp, as this can negatively affect one’s financial well-being. It is necessary to avoid debts today, but also not to refuse help with a loan – it is better to postpone them for the next day. Planting plants is also bad manners, as they can dry out.
