Free medicines: why you can’t always get them on the first try in the updated “Affordable Medicines” program

The Affordable Medicines Program expanded its capabilities in 2025, offering new options for Ukrainians living with chronic diseases.

Patients can receive necessary medications for free or with a small co-payment, and prices for some popular drugs have been reduced. The program covers the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, bronchial asthma, oncology, as well as endocrine system diseases and autoimmune conditions. Fifty-two new items have been added, 23 of which are combination drugs, as well as medications for children, pregnant women, and young mothers. Prescriptions can be written by family doctors, therapists, or narrow specialists, which patients can then exchange for medications at pharmacies participating in the program.

Currently, we observe that more than 5 million Ukrainians have already taken advantage of this program, with 62% being individuals over 65 years old and 35% being aged 39 to 64 years old. Patients report significant savings: a drug costing over 600 hryvnias costs only 65 hryvnias with a prescription.

However, the program faces particular challenges, including disruptions in the electronic system, especially during power or communication outages. There is also a low level of awareness among older people. However, despite these challenges, the program encourages people to adhere to their prescribed treatment and undergo regular check-ups.

Since March 1, Ukrainian drug manufacturers have reduced wholesale prices for 100 popular drugs by 30%. For example, captures have become cheaper by 50 hryvnias, and cinnamon by 5 hryvnias. These changes are particularly significant for individuals who regularly purchase essential medications.

Despite the difficulties caused by the war, Ukraine continues to develop, and the government is implementing initiatives that improve the lives of its people. Therefore, it is essential to volunteer and support initiatives that will enhance the lives of Ukrainians.
