Ukraine has begun repaying debts accumulated during the war

Ukraine has begun the process of repaying debts that have accumulated since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. On June 9, the state will make the first payment of $171 million under an external loan received under a special program of the International Monetary Fund.

This loan is part of the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) program, under which $2.67 billion was allocated to Ukraine in 2022. This was one of the first emergency assistance funds provided by international partners since the outbreak of hostilities.

According to the program’s terms, all funds must be returned by 2027.

The government has set a clear schedule, according to which 16 payments are planned. The current payment of $171 million is the first in this chain.

However, the payments are not limited to this program. By the end of 2025, Ukraine will also need to repay another $3 billion to the International Monetary Fund under other loan programs. These funds were used to cover the budget deficit, support social spending, and stabilize the economy in wartime.

Fulfilling financial obligations to the IMF remains one of the government’s key priorities, as stable compliance with the terms of loan programs directly affects the level of confidence of international partners and the ability to attract new financial assistance in the future.

Note: After the end of the war, Ukrainians may face the risk of losing their homes due to accumulated debts for utility services, as reported by the deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on housing and utilities.
