NASA reports large asteroid approaching Earth

On Sunday, June 22, a large asteroid, 2003 AY2, classified by NASA as potentially hazardous, will pass by Earth.

This object is over 393 meters long, and according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, it will approach our planet at a distance of approximately 5.43 million kilometers.

NASA considers celestial bodies with a diameter of more than 150 meters that pass closer than 7.5 million kilometers from Earth to be potentially hazardous. Therefore, asteroid 2003 AY2 falls under this definition.

However, scientists are confident that the threat from this asteroid is minimal. Its trajectory is stable, and the possibility of a collision with our planet is excluded.

In addition to 2003 AY2, two more asteroids will fly near Earth – 2007 JX2 and 2020 XR, which have diameters of 396 and 365 meters, respectively. It is assumed that their sizes can reach 670 and 650 meters. These objects are also classified as potentially hazardous due to their size and proximity to Earth.
