Ukrainian schools are preparing for long blackouts lasting 12 hours

A project to develop energy independence has been launched in Ukrainian educational institutions, which will allow schools to function without electricity for up to 12 hours. This was announced by Viktor Mykyta, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, on his Telegram channel.

As the official noted, given the ongoing attacks by Russia on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Ukrainians need to be prepared for different scenarios. He stressed the importance of a balanced response at all levels.

Mykyta also spoke about the key topic of the meeting, which was to discuss the initiative to create energy-independent educational institutions in communities. This project enables academic institutions to operate autonomously, thanks to energy storage and solar power plants, even during power outages.

The goal of this initiative is to establish crisis-resistant centers, modeled after schools, that can continue operating in the event of power outages. In the event of enemy attacks on energy infrastructure, the bastion schools will become places where children can stay after school, participate in sports, watch movies, attend lectures, and play educational games.

In the first stage of the project, the emphasis will be on the largest bastion schools, which are already equipped with shelters and solid fuel boilers. For schools where such systems are not available, it is planned to install backup heating systems. At the second stage, the initiative will cover other bastion educational institutions.

In addition, according to Mykyta, after-school programs will be developed for students, adapted to their age and interests.
