Anna Wintour is leaving Vogue after 37 years: who will be sought to replace her

Anna Wintour, who has led American Vogue for more than three decades, has decided to step down as editor-in-chief while retaining her seat on the Condé Nast board. Despite the change in role, she will continue to influence the world of fashion journalism.

Wintour announced her intention to step down as editor-in-chief at a staff meeting on June 26, ending her 37 years in the role.

According to The Daily Front Row, WWD and Business of Fashion, Wintour, 75, will no longer lead American Vogue but will remain Condé Nast’s chief content officer and editorial director for international Vogue. She will continue to define an editorial strategy for brands such as Vanity Fair, GQ, Architectural Digest, and others.

During the meeting, she emphasized the importance of constant evolution and is now looking to support younger editors in realizing their vision. That’s precisely the kind of person she’s looking for as the new head of content for American Vogue.

Wintour also stated that she would continue to be actively involved in Vogue’s numerous initiatives, including the Met Gala, Vogue World, and other cultural projects. She will continue to be involved in the magazine’s coverage of theater and tennis.

Anna Wintour began her career at Vogue in 1988, succeeding Grace Mirabella. Her first cover image, which showcased a new approach to fashion, caused a significant stir among readers.

Wintour became a symbol of change in fashion journalism, paving the way for a new era in which stars appeared more often on covers and fashion became more accessible to mass culture. She is credited with influencing the creation of Miranda Priestly’s image in The Devil Wears Prada.

The 2009 documentary “The September Issue” was one of the first examples of Vogue’s editorial process being made public. Wintour also served as artistic director of Condé Nast and became a global content consultant in 2019. In 2025, she was awarded an honorary knighthood by the British monarchy.

While her role in the day-to-day running of Vogue will change, Wintour will remain a key figure in shaping the magazine’s editorial policy.

Her successor has not yet been named.
