Zelensky plans to appoint Umerov as ambassador to the US: possible personnel changes in the Cabinet of Ministers

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he plans to replace Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, confirming the possibility of appointing Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to the post. The move could lead to significant changes in the composition of the Cabinet.

During a press conference in Rome, Zelenskyy expressed his intention to complete Oksana Markarova’s diplomatic mission in Washington. He stressed that he had already had a conversation with Markarova, thanked her for her work, and expressed his desire to see her in Ukrainian state structures. “I would like her to work in Ukraine. If she decides otherwise, that is her choice,” the president said.

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of appointing a “strong person” to the post of ambassador who can focus on key priorities, such as strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and cooperation with Western partners. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov was named as one of the possible candidates.

“If I decide to appoint Umerov, it will certainly entail serious personnel changes in the Ukrainian government,” Zelensky stressed. According to him, such a rotation is essential not only for the diplomatic sphere, but also for the internal structure of the government, since “all decisions and the budget are currently related to the war.”

The head of state noted that it is essential to intensify cooperation with the United States and strengthen military assistance, emphasizing that “a person must be strong, and have in mind the main goal – supporting Ukraine.” Although the president has not yet made a final decision, personnel changes are expected to occur shortly.

Other possible candidates for the post of Ukrainian ambassador to the United States included several ministers, but Olga Stefanishyna denied any information about her potential candidacy.
