Oil and blackheads: The risks of TikTok tips for your skin
TikTok Trend: Oil for Blackheads
A new trend has recently taken off on TikTok, involving using oil to remove blackheads. The method consists of applying coconut, olive, or castor oil to your nose or T-zone, waiting a few minutes, and then rinsing it off. Proponents of this approach claim that it provides instant results.
However, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Geeta Yadav says that blackheads are not just dirt, but sebaceous plugs made up of oxidized keratin and dead skin cells that are deep within your pores. Oil, she says, cannot remove them.
The leading causes of blackheads can be excessive sebum production, poor skincare, polluted air, and hormonal changes. Using oils for this purpose can have the opposite effect – thick oil can clog pores, creating a favorable environment for bacteria, which can lead to acne and inflammation.
Practical solutions for eliminating blackheads:
Salicylic acid – helps dissolve plugs, reduces inflammation, and is a moderate exfoliant.
Clay masks, which contain bentonite or kaolin, can absorb sebum, tighten pores, and soothe the skin. They are recommended to be used 1-2 times a week.
Retinoids – stimulate cell renewal and cleanse pores. You need to start with small doses and be sure to use sunscreen.
Professional cleaning – it is recommended to be carried out 1-3 times every few months to remove deep impurities and reduce the risk of inflammation.
Oils can be used for light cleansing or moisturizing the skin, but not as a means to eliminate blackheads. The doctor recommends focusing on proven care methods and consulting with specialists, rather than relying on advice popular on TikTok.
