Illegal logging: 1.5 hectares of forest damaged in Chernihiv region, causing losses of 2.2 million hryvnias
Pines, birches, and aspens were destroyed on an area of 1.5 hectares. The damage caused to the state is estimated at more than 2.2 million hryvnias.
Illegal deforestation: significant losses
The State Environmental Inspectorate of the Chernihiv region received a report of mass deforestation. The inspection confirmed the information: a significant number of trees were destroyed in the specified area. The attackers cut down pines, birches, and aspens; some of the wood had already been harvested for use.
It turned out that the deforestation was carried out without the necessary permits, which is a gross violation of the Forest Code of Ukraine and the law “On the Plant World”. Due to these illegal actions, significant damage was caused to nature, which the inspectors estimated at more than 2.2 million hryvnias.
Why is this important?
Forests are the national wealth of Ukraine; they not only supply wood, but also perform critically essential functions for preserving the environment:
Protect soils from erosion.
Clean the air, helping to counteract climate change.
Preserve water resources.
All forests, regardless of ownership, are subject to state protection, and the illegal logging of these forests is severely punished by law.
What happens next?
Environmentalists have documented violations, collected all necessary evidence, and transferred the materials to law enforcement agencies. Now the police must assess the actions of the offenders and bring them to justice. This is another step in the fight against illegal logging in Ukraine.
