Biometric system on the Ukrainian-Polish border: possible delays
The Polish Border Guard Service has begun implementing a new biometric system at several checkpoints, which may lead to delays for motorists and pedestrians.
The State Border Guard Service provided the relevant information.
Currently, the following queues are observed at checkpoints in the Lviv region:
- “Shehyni”: approximately 150 vehicles;
- “Krakivets”: 20 vehicles;
- “Nyzhankavychi”: 10 vehicles;
- “Smilnytsia”, “Uhryniv”, “Hrushiv” and “Rava-Ruska”: traffic without delays.
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine explained that the new system scans faces and fingerprints when individuals leave and enter Poland, which may extend the registration process due to additional verification procedures.
Additionally, repair work is underway at the Shehyny checkpoint on the Ukrainian side, temporarily reducing the capacity for cars and trucks to pass through. Drivers are advised to factor in possible delays when planning their border crossing time.
Additionally, Andriy Demchenko, a representative of the State Border Service of Ukraine, noted during a telethon that young men under 22 years of age must have a passport and a military registration document to leave Ukraine. The absence of at least one of these documents will lead to a refusal to cross the border.
According to the State Border Service, the most significant number of attempts to illegally cross the border is recorded on the Romanian side. At the same time, there are significantly fewer such cases on the Polish side.
