Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine analyzed the results of the Kursk Operation
Valeriy Zaluzhny summed up the Kursk operation and admitted that its price was too high. In an article published on September 24 on ZN.ua, the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, now the ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom, shared his thoughts.
He noted that successful operations are possible only when losses do not exceed acceptable norms and when there are clear goals.
In his opinion, experience shows that breakthroughs on limited fronts do not always bring the expected results.
“The defense forces were able to realize their technological and tactical advantages, not only stopping the attacks, but also continuing the offensive – although without strategic success. The price of such actions is unknown to me, but, of course, it was too high,” Zaluzhny emphasized.
In October 2024, he emphasized that he had not had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the military plans of the operation. Still, he believes that the command took into account all the necessary nuances.
“Believe me, the decision to carry out such operations, the directions of the offensive, and the plans are determined only by the military-political leadership of Ukraine. An assessment of the actions taken can be given after the operation is completed,” he added.
Regarding the connection of the operation with the current front-line situation, Zaluzhny called for leaving the assessment to professionals.
The Kursk operation started on August 6, 2024. For six months, Ukrainian units held the city of Sudzha near the border and controlled part of the neighboring districts.
In the spring of 2025, Russian troops regained control over Sudzha and a significant part of the neighboring districts, and also entered the territory of Sumy Oblast, capturing several border villages. However, in the summer of this year, Ukrainian forces were able to regain some of the lost positions and push back the enemy.
On June 30, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Russian offensive in Sumy Oblast had failed.
He also reported that the Defense Forces continue to operate within the framework of the Kursk operation actively. On July 27, the Center for Strategic Communications of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that units of the Kursk group liberated the village of Kindrativka in the Sumy region.
Additionally, it is worth noting:
Valery Zaluzhny previously stated that he planned to create an elite military corps with training according to Western standards, but due to bureaucracy, this was not implemented.
He also spoke about the creation of a joint Ukrainian-American headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Zaluzhny continues to share important news and updates on the situation on the front.
