Memory of the Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus: October 7

Today, October 7, we honor the memory of the holy martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, Roman soldiers who, remaining faithful to their Christian faith, suffered martyrdom. Their story is a vivid example of brotherhood, spiritual strength, and loyalty to their beliefs in the face of cruel persecution. On this day, believers remember the power of faith that unites and uplifts, and also pray for support in difficult times and the strengthening of human relationships.

In the church calendar, October 7 commemorates Saints Sergius and Bacchus, who were famous defenders of Christianity during the early Roman Empire era. Their story begins in the 4th century, when Christianity had not yet acquired the status of a state religion, and loyalty to Christ cost them their lives.

Sergius and Bacchus held high positions in the army under the reign of Emperor Maximian. They were considered exemplary officers, but after it was discovered that they professed Christianity, they were subjected to numerous tortures. Bacchus was killed first, while Sergius, despite the torture, also refused to renounce his faith and accepted a martyr’s death. Their loyalty to each other and joint struggle became a symbol of true brotherhood and steadfastness of spirit.

On this day in Ukraine, believers pray for the strengthening of faith, loyalty in friendship and family relationships, and also ask for the intercession of saints under challenging situations. Traditionally, this day is considered auspicious for concluding fraternal agreements, supporting friends, and expressing gratitude to loved ones.

The people believe that on this day one should not conflict, deceive, or betray – this is perceived as a grave spiritual mistake. There is also a belief that praying to Sergius and Bacchus can help find true friends or strengthen existing relationships.
