Russia’s losses in 2025 exceeded 100,000 soldiers

The recent major offensive of Russian troops in Ukraine, which began in May 2025, did not produce any significant results.

According to information, this is Russia’s third large-scale offensive campaign since the beginning of the full-scale war. The operation covered almost the entire front line, but ended without significant changes — the front line remains in mostly the same state since the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the fall of 2022.

According to the publication, in 2025, Russian troops were able to capture only about 0.4% of Ukrainian territory, while suffering huge losses.

The Economist estimates that from the beginning of the conflict until January of this year, Russia’s losses amounted to 640,000 to 877,000 soldiers, including 137,000 to 228,000 dead. As of October 13, 2025, these indicators have increased by almost 60%, to 984 thousand – 1.44 million people, of which 190-480 thousand died.

At the same time, according to the publication, 8,668 Ukrainian soldiers died this year, but this is only a minimum estimate. The Economist estimates the ratio of losses between the warring parties at approximately 1 to 5 in Ukraine’s favor.

Analysts emphasize that the losses of Russian forces in the summer were much higher than those of the Ukrainians, and such a rate of losses could lead to serious consequences for Moscow.

“If there are no drastic changes, Vladimir Putin will not be able to win the war on the battlefield. The fact that he continues to try shows that his ideas have been exhausted,” the publication summarizes.

Let’s add that thousands of soldiers are deserting from the ranks of the Russian army — more than 25,000 have escaped from one military district alone.
