Ukrainians are in no hurry to switch to electric cars: where are they most common in the country?

Despite the growing interest in electric vehicles in Ukraine, their number remains extremely small. According to the Institute for Automotive Research, the average number of electric cars per 1,000 inhabitants in Ukraine is only 4.5 units.

This figure is especially striking, given that the total number of passenger cars per capita is approximately 267 units. Experts emphasize that the share of BEV-class electric vehicles in the total car fleet remains relatively low—only 1.6%. For comparison, in Norway, where electric transport is most popular, this figure exceeds 160 electric cars per 1,000 people, while in Germany it is about 29 units. Ukraine exceeds the indicators of Poland (2.6) and Bulgaria (2.8).

The distribution of electric cars in Ukraine is also uneven. The most significant number of them is registered in Kyiv and the Lviv region—12.3 and 10.2 electric vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, respectively. Kyiv region ranks third with 7.1 units. The situation is explained by the high income level of residents of the capital and the proximity of the Lviv region to the European borders.

The lowest indicators are seen in regions that suffered the most from the war, such as Kherson (0.3), Donetsk (0.2), and the Luhansk region (0.1). According to experts, the electric vehicle market in Ukraine is currently at an early stage of development, and significant growth in volumes is expected in the future.
