How Spotify intends to transform the music industry with artificial intelligence
Spotify has announced a new agreement with leading music companies, including Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe. They will work together to create products that use artificial intelligence, adhering to ethical standards.
While details of future services are not disclosed, the platform announced the launch of a research lab and a team focused on generative artificial intelligence. The main goal is to develop tools that help musicians and offer new opportunities to listeners, without violating ethical standards.
As part of this initiative, Spotify will adhere to several key principles:
• Collaboration with music labels, distributors, and publishers. All new products will be created only with the consent of all participants.
• Voluntary participation. Artists and copyright holders will have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether to collaborate with artificial intelligence and in what format.
• Fair compensation. Products created with AI participation should generate new revenue for artists and creators.
• Keeping it human. AI-based tools should not replace artists, but help them develop and establish connections with their audience.
The company has faced past criticism for its use of AI on its platform. In particular, this applies to services such as personalized DJ and Spotify Wrapped 2024, created with the help of NotebookLM. Some artists also question the concept of “fair compensation” that Spotify offers.
