Refugees in Switzerland are banned from leaving the country: does this apply to Ukrainians?

Switzerland has adopted new restrictions for asylum seekers, who will no longer be able to travel outside the country, including to Schengen countries. These changes will apply to all refugees and will not allow them to leave, even if the purpose of the trip is to return to their homeland.

According to the new rules, travel abroad will be limited, except for serious personal reasons. In the event of illness or death of a close relative, a stay in the country of origin is allowed for a maximum of 30 days. It is also specified that refugees can leave to resolve issues related to property, education, or employment.

The changes to the legislation were approved by parliament back in 2021, but implementation was delayed due to the temporary protection granted to Ukrainian refugees.

Ukrainians staying in Switzerland still have some freedom of movement. They can stay in Ukraine for up to 15 days within 6 months. Previously, this period was three months.

In 2024, the Swiss authorities plan to implement the new rules for all asylum seekers finally. There is an intention to prepare separate provisions for Ukrainians. Consultations on the relevant legislative changes have already begun and will continue until February 2026.
