Heavy snowfall, ice and blizzards: challenges of the winter season
Ukraine is approaching winter, and many people are wondering what to expect: will we see severe frosts and unexpected weather phenomena?
According to Vera Balabukh, head of the department of applied meteorology and climatology at the Hydrometeorological Institute of Ukraine, this winter may be harsh due to severe weather driven by powerful southern cyclones. According to forecasts, the most significant difficulties may arise in February.
Although Ukrainian winters have been exceptionally warm in recent years, this does not rule out the possibility of frost and significant snowfall. Ukraine’s location at temperate latitudes means it feels the influence of Arctic cold air masses.
The official forecast indicates that winter temperatures will exceed average levels, with periods of cooling short-lived. However, the entry of Arctic air into the Mediterranean may trigger southern cyclones, worsening weather conditions, including blizzards, heavy snowfall, gusty winds, and ice. According to forecasts, February will be the most challenging month of this winter.
It should be noted that Ukrainians are also warned of a possible significant change in the weather on New Year’s Eve, with worsening conditions that may be accompanied by sleet and cold snaps down to -12°C.
