Don’t store bread in the fridge: how to prolong its freshness

Bread quickly loses its freshness, so it’s essential to store it properly to keep it soft for as long as possible. It’s not difficult, and there are a few simple tricks that will help.

Food blogger Christian Alisha explained why bread starts to dry out and lose its softness. She recommends wrapping the bread in a cotton kitchen towel and storing it in a cool place, away from heat sources. This method not only helps maintain freshness but also prevents mold from forming.

“This method is effective because the cotton material allows air to circulate and moisture can escape, preventing the bread from drying out too quickly. This is especially useful for sourdough bread, which requires a special approach to storage,” she explained.

Bakery manager Sophie Carey also pointed out that storing bread in the refrigerator is not recommended. While cold prevents mold from growing, it also makes bread go stale faster. At low temperatures, the starch in the bread begins to recrystallize, causing it to lose its flavor much quicker than it can become moldy.

The best way to store bread is to use linen or cotton bags, or wooden bread bins or containers with ventilation holes. These solutions will help keep your bread fresh and tasty for a long time.
