Roadside inspection: expert criticizes new initiative for drivers
In Ukraine, the discussion of a proposal to introduce roadside technical inspections of cars with mandatory vehicle stops has been reactivated. Critics of this initiative point out that it may increase corruption risks and lead to ineffective inspections. Vadim Ignatov, CEO of Luaz Motors, emphasizes that such an inspection method will not only fail to ensure high quality but may also create significant inconvenience for drivers.
Ignatov believes that checking the technical condition of cars on the road raises doubts about the objectivity of the results. He notes that in the conditions of street inspections, complex parameters, such as environmental indicators, cannot be accurately measured, especially in winter, when low temperatures affect the equipment. As a result, such measures do not provide an accurate picture of cars’ technical condition but only impose additional costs on their owners.
The expert notes that modern digital technologies enable inspection without stopping vehicles. For example, police have access to electronic databases on tablets, and automatic license plate recognition cameras can identify uninsured cars by license plate. This approach reduces the likelihood of corruption by eliminating contact between police officers and drivers.
Ignatov also recalls the negative experience of past years, when environmental inspections stopped cars based on unreliable measurement results, leading to numerous lawsuits. Drivers argued that objective technical control on the road is impossible, which led to a loss of trust in such practices.
The expert believes that returning to the idea of roadside technical inspections will not solve the issue of safety, but, on the contrary, lays the foundation for abuse and corruption. He notes that such a model is inefficient and expensive for society and the state as a whole.
