Experts assess whether the Ukrainian power system can withstand the winter cold

In addition to Russia’s intense attacks on the Ukrainian energy system, the country faces a new serious challenge. This was stated in an interview by Oleksiy Kucherenko, a People’s Deputy of Ukraine and First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing.

In January, weather forecasters predict a drop in temperature to -18 degrees. According to Kucherenko, with proper preparation, the Ukrainian power system can withstand such conditions.

“What do you want me to say? No, it won’t withstand? I won’t say that. It won’t be easy, but keep in mind that repairs are underway at the same time. Power engineers are working according to schedules to improve the situation,” he commented, answering a question about the ability of the power system to withstand frosts down to -18°C.

According to the deputy, much depends on further Russian attacks. What objects will also be essential to hit?

“It is difficult to predict. Our energy system can withstand the load if missiles and drones do not destroy it. Here, the issue is no longer about the energy system, but about the air defense system,” Kucherenko emphasized.

He also reported that meetings are currently being held to strengthen the protection of key facilities. These meetings are about cooperation between energy professionals and representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine responsible for air defense.

“There are tense relations between energy professionals and air defense. They blame each other. Energy professionals are under attack, while air defense misses attacks,” Kucherenko concluded.
