These mistakes can lead to significant fines
This winter season, drivers in Ukraine may receive fines for using vehicles in an improper condition. It is essential to pay attention to snow and ice on headlights, windows, roofs, or license plates, as well as the use of summer tires in low temperatures, which is dangerous, especially in sub-zero temperatures.
Insufficient tread depth, worn tires, or dirty windows, which reduce visibility and create a danger on the road, are also considered violations.
The police are paying special attention to tire condition. Using summer tires in winter can be considered a failure to comply with the car’s technical requirements for road conditions. Although there is currently no direct fine for summer tires, a possible penalty may be imposed for creating a dangerous situation. The authorities are also considering legislative initiatives that could increase liability for these violations. Worn tires with a tread depth of less than 1.6 mm are a violation, and in winter conditions, a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm is recommended. Using different tires on the same axle or a combination of studded and non-studded tires is also prohibited.
Fines can be imposed for the car’s general condition. For example, uncleaned headlights, snow on the roof that can fly off while driving, dirty license plates, and windows that restrict visibility are all grounds for holding the driver liable. Dangerous maneuvers are also listed among serious violations, including moving on sleds or other objects attached to the car.
To avoid fines and problems while driving, it is worth thoroughly cleaning the car of snow and ice, particularly on the roof, hood, headlights, and license plates. It is recommended to switch to winter tires when the temperature is consistently around +7°C. It is also helpful to regularly wash the car with salt reagents and treat rubber seals with silicone spray to prevent doors and locks from freezing in cold weather.
