It’s too early to talk about spring: Ukraine is threatened by a new wave of severe frosts

Even though Ukraine will experience temporary warming in the coming days, one should not rush to conclude that spring has arrived. This opinion was expressed by the head of the meteorological forecast department of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, Natalia Golenya, in a comment.

According to her, the air temperature will remain close to zero until February 15. Minor frosts are possible at night, and during the day the temperature will rise to +1…+3°:

“A slight frost is possible at night, and during the day a slight plus of +1…+3° will be observed,” the specialist added.

However, a new cold outbreak is predicted from February 16, so it is too early to talk about spring weather. Golenya noted that after a short-term warming, frosts of varying intensity may appear again. Night temperatures may drop to -3…-8°, and in some regions even to -10…-12°. During the day, the temperature will not rise above 0 °; it will fluctuate between 0 and -5°.

So, the inhabitants of Ukraine will face an alternation of warm and cold days: after a few days of thaw, frosts will come again. According to Goleni, such temperature fluctuations are due to the activity of Arctic masses and the movement of atmospheric fronts, so there is no reason to expect stable spring heat yet. The specialist also stressed the need to account for night frosts when planning outdoor work to avoid hypothermia and frostbite.
