Strawberries will bloom after winter: how to feed them now to get beautiful berries

Spring is coming, which means your strawberry bushes will soon wake up from their winter rest. In order to get a generous harvest, the necessary measures should be taken now.

It is difficult for plants to adapt after cold weather: they direct their energy to new leaves, the formation of flower buds and preparation for fruiting. If you do not provide early feeding, the bushes may miss the rhythm, and the berries will become less juicy and smaller.

Effective feeding: ammonia water

One of the proven spring methods is the use of an aqueous solution of ammonia. Nitrogen in an accessible form activates the growth of leaves, which is important for full flowering and pouring of berries. Treatment of leaves with such a solution can also protect the plant from some pests and diseases at the beginning of the season. It is necessary to observe the proportions: 3 tablespoons of ammonia per 10 liters of water, the bushes should be watered only when the soil temperature is above +9°С. It is recommended to do this in the evening or on cloudy days. Before processing, the soil should be watered with clean water so as not to damage the roots.

Mulch is useful for the root zone

After feeding, strawberries should be covered with mulch. The use of straw, sawdust, agrofibre or special films with a layer of 3-5 cm helps to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, prevent the berries from contacting the ground and reduce the risk of rot. Mulch forms a stable microclimate in the root zone, which ensures uniform and comfortable growth of plants throughout the season.
