Bullying, not real indexation of pensions: 100 hryvnias is not enough for people to survive

Danylo Getmantsev, the head of the relevant committee, expressed concern about the existing system of indexation of pensions and the amounts of current supplements for Ukrainian elderly citizens.

According to Getmantsev, an increase of 100 hryvnias in the current economic conditions cannot be considered a significant improvement – this amount has no impact on the well-being of pensioners. He emphasized that for pensioners, such an amount is equivalent to only a few loaves of bread, which clearly demonstrates the insufficient effectiveness of the current social support mechanisms.

Getmantsev also drew attention to the fact that the indexation formula introduced in 2017 does not meet the principles of justice and in the future only worsens the financial situation of the elderly.

In his opinion, the process of reviewing pension payments should be clear and transparent: the increase in pensions should directly depend on the growth of the average wage in the country. This could ensure a more equitable income dynamics for pensioners.

He also expressed his concerns about the imbalance in the system, where so-called “special” or preferential pensions grow along with the increase in wages in certain categories of civil servants, in particular in the judicial and prosecutorial spheres. At the same time, a complex formula operates for many pensioners, which actually reduces their purchasing power.

Getmantsev emphasized that small changes alone cannot solve this problem. In his opinion, it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive reform of the entire solidarity pension system with clearly defined sources of financing. He is confident that the resources for this exist, and the development of a new model will not require great efforts – the main thing is to start this process in the near future.
