New lessons in primary schools: what will change in the daily schedule

Ukraine has adopted a new educational program for primary schools, which significantly changes the approaches to teaching students in grades 1–4. This program will introduce greater flexibility in the formation of the schedule and content of classes. The first to learn according to the new standards will be first-graders who will begin their studies in September 2028.

The Ministry of Education and Science noted that the new program had a unique structure, including the distribution of the educational load and general principles for organizing the learning process. The program was developed on the basis of a large-scale public discussion, during which more than 350 proposals and 17 thousand responses from the pedagogical community were processed.

Among the main innovations is the ability to vary school hours. Educational institutions will be able to independently choose the number of hours for individual subjects in accordance with the needs of students, for example, up to eight hours per week for the Ukrainian language. The time allocated to the integrated course “I Explore the World” may also vary.

The Ministry of Education and Science also emphasized that the new educational rules take into account the level of preparation of schoolchildren, the specifics of schools and individual characteristics of classes. Teachers will be able to adjust education to the needs of children, which will ensure more adapted learning.

The program will become mandatory for all types of educational institutions, including specialized and inclusive schools. For students with special educational needs, the correctional and developmental component has been improved, which aims to provide additional support during learning.
