How to grow tasty and healthy potatoes: tips from a summer resident
Germinating potatoes is an important step that will help you get early tubers, strengthen the plants, and protect them from diseases.
For germination, choose healthy, medium-sized potatoes without spots or damage. Early varieties are best. Place the tubers in a single layer in boxes or crates, with the eyes facing up. The place should be bright and cool – from +10 to +15°C, without direct sunlight.
After 3-4 weeks, short, dense sprouts up to 1 cm will appear. They may have a greenish or purple tint. For best results, treating the tubers with ash or growth stimulants is recommended before planting.
Plant potatoes when the soil temperature reaches +8…+10°C. Plant the tubers in holes 8 to 10 cm deep, leaving a 30-35 cm space between them. Humus or compost can be added to the soil beforehand.
Avoid planting large tubers – they can lead to weak sprouts. Also, don’t plant in cold or waterlogged soil – this can cause rot. Keep an eye on the humidity, but do not overwater the plants. Marigolds planted nearby will help deter pests.
Following these recommendations, you can grow healthy and tasty early potatoes at the end of summer.
