Large-scale repression against tax evaders has begun: who may be expelled in the near future
In Ukraine, approximately 3,000 postgraduate students who entered in 2023 were dismissed. Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi commented on this decision.
According to Vynnytskyi, postgraduate students were expelled as a result of inspections carried out in higher education institutions. These measures are ongoing, and after the June sessions are completed, the number of expulsions among those who do not fulfill their educational or individual plans is expected to increase.
Vynnytskyi noted that the ministry’s goal is not mass expulsions. The inspections are conducted to identify students who do not use postgraduate studies for their intended purpose. Those actively engaged in scientific activities, writing articles, conducting research, working on dissertations, and taking exams can continue their studies without hindrance.
“This is not a witch hunt. If a postgraduate student is doing his scientific work, he has every reason to continue his studies,” the deputy minister emphasized.
He also pointed out that many postgraduate students who entered 2022–2023 will likely not complete their path to defending their dissertations.
In addition, new requirements are being introduced in Ukraine for postgraduate and doctoral students. Now, in the third year, they must successfully pass exams in Ukrainian and foreign languages to confirm their active participation in scientific activities.
He explained that these innovations aim to ensure that students are actually engaged in scientific research and working on dissertations. This year, the first nationwide exam for postgraduate students in their third year will be held.
It is also worth noting that postgraduate studies are no longer a “shelter”: in 2025, the number of budget places for doctoral students will significantly decrease. Do not forget that some students may be mobilized despite the postponement, emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsibility in the educational process.
