Дивні прояви поведінки собак: коли це нормально, а коли варто звернутися до ветеринара

When to Know Your Dog’s Ears Need to Be Cleaned, and How to Do It Safely

Caring for your pet’s ears is essential for their health. Regular and proper ear cleaning can prevent inflammation, infections, and foul odor.

One important rule is to avoid using cotton swabs. They can injure the ear canals or push the wax deeper. Special hygiene lotions designed for animals are recommended.

The cleaning procedure is simple: slightly pull back the hair around the ear, apply the lotion, and give a small massage at the base of the ear. When you hear a characteristic sloshing sound, everything is going well. Then let your pet shake his head so dirt and excess wax come out with the liquid. Finish cleaning by wiping the ear with a cotton pad or tissue, avoiding deep intervention.

The frequency of procedures depends on the breed of animal. For example, dogs with long ears, such as cocker spaniels and basset hounds, need to be cleaned once a week. Most other dogs and cats need to be cleaned once a month. If your vet gives you other recommendations, you should follow them.

Watch for signs of problems: frequent scratching of the ears, an unpleasant odor, redness, discharge, or tilting the head to one side may indicate the presence of otitis, fungal infections, or parasites. In such cases, it is essential to consult a veterinarian.

Keeping the ears clean not only maintains the animal’s health but also strengthens the trust between you and your pet. Create a calm atmosphere during the procedures, use quality products, and don’t forget to reward your pet with treats after cleaning. This will help make the process enjoyable and comfortable for your four-legged friend.
