Russian agent tried to steal secret developments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from a defense enterprise

The Security Service of Ukraine detained a 47-year-old engineer who worked at a defense plant in the Odesa region because he was spying for the Russian FSB to steal secret developments for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The SBU counterintelligence revealed an attempt by Russian special services to obtain data on Ukrainian military technologies. The detainee was engaged in collecting information on the production of components for the latest automotive equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. To do this, he officially got a job at a factory that fulfills defense orders.

SBU employees monitored his actions, discovering him at the stage of recruitment by Russian agents. From the very beginning of his service, he tried to gain access to technical documentation and drawings for the production of parts for combat vehicles.

In his activities, the agent tried to gain the trust of his colleagues by performing the functions of a corrector. He traveled around the Odessa region to collect information about the positions of air defense systems and radar stations, which would help the enemy in their evasive maneuvers.

After the arrest, the SBU conducted searches, during which photographs of technical documentation were seized, along with other personal evidence of the agent’s criminal activities.

The detainee was charged under Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to state treason during a state of martial law. He is currently being held in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was coordinated jointly with the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
