Ukraine celebrates the Day of Interethnic Harmony and Cultural Diversity for the first time

By a decree of the President of Ukraine, issued on May 21, 2024, May 21 was declared a new national holiday. This year is special as Ukraine celebrates this date for the first time, marking the significant contribution of national minorities and indigenous peoples to the country’s cultural wealth.

This date reminds us of the unity that has endured numerous historical tests, particularly during the Russian-Ukrainian war. The enemy tried to destabilize the country, but Ukraine remained united.

Each ethnic group and community is an integral part of Ukrainian society. Their traditions, art, languages, customs, and religious beliefs create a rich cultural landscape that enriches Ukraine. This diversity gives Ukraine strength, wisdom, and a global outlook.

Today, the country strives to build a society where every person, regardless of their origin, has the right to dignity, security, and respect. The Day of Interethnic Harmony reminds us that only through joint efforts can we overcome the challenges that face us.

This holiday is an opportunity to thank all ethnic communities who, through their contributions, cultural activities, and active civic engagement, contribute to building a strong, peaceful, and European Ukraine.

The slogan for this year’s holiday, “Everyone has their voice, but our heart is one,” emphasizes the uniqueness of each person, language, and culture while underscoring the shared love for Ukraine.

Cultural diversity and tolerance are the basis for the development of a democratic, sustainable, and socially cohesive society.
