After the war — without housing? MP warns debtors about the risks

After the conflict in Ukraine ends, citizens may lose their homes due to existing debts for utility services. Oleksiy Kucherenko, the deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on housing and communal services, made this statement.

He noted that the debt situation is critical, as the total amount of unpaid bills has already exceeded 200 billion hryvnias.

“No action is being taken at the moment, but after the war ends, especially if certain political forces gain strength, the process of seizing apartments may begin,” Kucherenko emphasized.

Currently, the authorities are not implementing coercive measures against debtors due to the effect of martial law. However, after victory, the situation may change dramatically, especially given the increasing influence of political forces that support tough economic decisions.

Kucherenko also added that the state should now develop mechanisms to resolve the debt problem, thereby avoiding the mass seizure of housing after the war ends.

Additionally, the Verkhovna Rada is without heating due to a breakdown in the heating network. Eliminating the emergency may take several days to complete. This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak in his Telegram channel, noting that “in the coming days, the Rada will work without heating.” He also jokingly said that the deputies’ active work would help them stay warm during this period.
