Moscow calls for UN Security Council meeting, accusing West of threats to world peace

On May 27, the Russian Federation submitted a request to the UN Security Council to convene a meeting focused on “threats to global peace and security.” According to Moscow, these threats stem from the actions of several European states, which are believed to be hindering the peaceful resolution of the situation in Ukraine.

The statement was made by Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, according to reports by Russian media, citing Censor.NET.

The meeting is scheduled for May 30 at 10:00 local time in New York, which will correspond to 17:00 Kyiv time. The Russian side emphasizes that this initiative is a “mirror response” to the request of Western countries to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council dedicated to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, which is due to take place on May 29.

Polyansky also noted that Western states are trying to maintain attention to the Ukrainian issue within the Security Council, even if this contradicts the interests of the new US administration.

This move comes against the backdrop of recent peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which began on May 16 in Istanbul after President Vladimir Putin invited them to resume dialogue. Following an appeal by US President Donald Trump, Ukraine agreed to participate in the talks, which led to an agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war from each side and to set terms for a ceasefire.

European powers, including France, Germany, Poland, and the UK, have created the Weimar+ alliance to ensure their participation in the peace process and to ensure that any agreement takes into account Ukraine’s interests and European security.
