A new city with luxury housing is planned to be built in the Egyptian desert
Construction has begun on a new city in the desert near Cairo, Jirian, which will feature modern buildings, yacht clubs, and commercial areas using water from the Nile.
The ambitious project, covering an area of 6.8 million square meters, will be part of the government’s New Delta program, which aims to develop the agricultural sector on more than 2.28 million acres.
To support Jirian’s implementation, it is planned to dispatch about 10 million cubic meters of water from the Nile every day, which will be approximately 7% of Egypt’s annual quota.
The project involves the creation of residential complexes with panoramic windows, business zones, a large marina for yachts, and a free economic zone.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly stated that the government is striving to implement innovative and unconventional solutions for the efficient use of resources while also aiming to increase the value of land and attract investment.
At the same time, the initiative is controversial because it significantly diverts water from the fertile lands of the Nile Delta to meet the needs of the wealthier segments of the population, which occurs in the context of general water shortages, energy, and economic problems in the country.
