New high school: what changes await students and parents from 2027

On September 1, 2027, a major high school reform will commence in Ukraine, enabling students to select educational profiles and courses that align with their interests and career aspirations.

The Ministry of Education and Science has already prepared a detailed action plan that explains how the new system will function and what to expect from high school students shortly.

What opportunities will appear after grade 9?

After completing grade 9, students will receive new options for continuing their education, including:

Entry to an academic lyceum with the opportunity to choose a profile according to their interests (humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, etc.);

Continuation of education in vocational educational institutions, where they will receive not only secondary education but also professional skills.

This innovation aims to make the educational process more conscious and practical.

What is profile education?

In specialized schools, students will study not only mandatory subjects but will also be able to shape their curriculum independently. They will choose subjects and courses that align with their preferences or professional goals. Thus, high school will become a bridge between general education and higher or vocational education.

Why does this matter?

The introduction of the new system is designed to help young people better understand their interests and strengths. Unlike the traditional “universal” approach, each student will be able to focus on their favorite direction, which in turn will better prepare them for entering higher education institutions or starting a career.
