Housing will be taken away due to utility debts: which Ukrainians risk being left homeless?

Ukrainian citizens emphasize the importance of timely payment for utility services, as accumulating debts can lead to strict measures, including possible deprivation of housing ownership.

It is essential to determine in what cases and on what grounds such sanctions can be applied.

Grounds for debt collection

According to current law, arrears for utility services may serve as the basis for filing a lawsuit with the court by the service provider. If the lawsuit is settled, forced debt collection may be possible.

Possibility of seizure of housing

Confiscation of housing is carried out only in extreme cases when all other methods of resolving debt issues have been exhausted. The court may decide to seize housing only for significant amounts of debt and if there is evidence of systematic non-payment.

Attention: there is no automatic eviction for debts. Each case is considered separately in court.

Alternatives to confiscation

Before taking radical measures, the debtor is usually offered other options for solving the problem:

Restructuring or installment debt;

granting subsidies;

Applying for social assistance.
