Ukraine is threatened by a new nuclear disaster: the authorities have raised the alarm over possible consequences

Ukraine is at risk of a new nuclear accident due to a possible repeated attempt by the occupiers to launch the Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant. Former Minister of Ecology Yuriy Kostenko announced this during an interview on one of the TV channels.

According to Kostenko, the actions of the Russian military completely disregard international standards and safety regulations in the field of nuclear energy. He noted that after the destruction of the Kakhovka reservoir, the Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant was left without an adequate cooling system for its reactors, which made its restart extremely hazardous.

Additionally, the Russian side currently lacks the technical capabilities to transmit electricity generated at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to the temporarily occupied territories. This increases the risk of serious consequences in the event of a future attempt to launch the plant.

Kostenko drew attention to the fact that there is a potential threat of radiation or even a full-fledged nuclear incident. He also pointed to the possibility of attacks on nuclear facilities controlled by Ukraine. However, he doubts that the Russian side will attack the reactors themselves since modern power units have reliable protective systems. However, substations that ensure the transmission of electricity to the country’s energy system may be under attack.

Kostenko recalled that last year, Russia threatened to strike Ukrainian nuclear power plants as part of the so-called “nuclear blackmail” if Ukrainian forces did not stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
