”Avoided the topic and morality”: James Cameron ”critically evaluated” Christopher Nolan’s successful film, which won seven ”Oscars”

James Cameron, the talented director of the famous films “Avatar” and “Titanic,” expressed his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer.” This picture, one of the most successful projects of 2023, earned nearly a billion dollars at the box office and received seven Academy Awards.

In an interview with Deadline, Cameron noted that, despite the film’s strong plot, it does not adequately address the consequences of a nuclear strike. According to “Oppenheimer,” there is only a moment when the hero encounters charred bodies, but then the emphasis shifts to emotions, lacking depth and meaning.

“I usually do not criticize other directors, but it seems to me that the film avoided exploring this important topic. Whether this is a studio decision or Nolan’s personal choice, I cannot say. But I work differently,” Cameron noted.

Cameron also spoke about his plans to make his film on the subject, an adaptation of Charles R. Pellegrino’s book “The Ghosts of Hiroshima.” He has been collecting and preparing material for 15 years but has yet to begin writing the script.

The journalists recalled Nolan’s words, in which he noted that he did not seek to cover the consequences of the atomic explosion and that for this, a director like Cameron was needed.

“Okay, Chris, I’ll do it. You come to the premiere and say something nice,” he added jokingly.

Cameron also expressed his desire to make the film uncensored, emphasizing the importance of an accurate depiction of historical events, similar to how Steven Spielberg portrayed the Normandy landings in Saving Private Ryan:

“It’s probably going to be my least commercially successful film. But I’m going to show everything as it was, without any filters or embellishments.”

In addition to this project, Cameron is collaborating on an adaptation of the novel The Devils with author Joe Abercrombie. In December 2025, viewers will be treated to a third Avatar, which will feature new tribes on Pandora living near volcanoes. The main antagonist will be played by Oona Chaplin, known for her role in Game of Thrones.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan has already begun work on a new project, The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s famous epic poem starring Tom Holland and Matt Damon. The film is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, and the first teaser has already been released online.
