Svyatoslav Dubyna: The defense budget is a shame for Ukrainians and a crime for those in power

On the 7 Steps channel, Svyatoslav Dubyna shared some thoughts on Ukraine’s budget policy, recalling a funny situation. He compared it to a joke about Moldovans who plant potatoes every day and dig them up in the evening due to hunger. Dubyna emphasized that such things, although they may be amusing, should not be taken lightly, especially in a war situation where they lead to real losses.

He noted that by analyzing military budgets, one can understand that Ukraine is still facing funding problems at the front. For example, in 2022, a few days before the invasion, Hetmantsev stated that defense funds could not be increased due to the poor condition of the roads, which were subsequently infiltrated by Russian troops. However, in June of the same year, the government changed its mind and increased defense spending to 51%.

According to Dubina, 2024 and 2025 promise to be years of victory, as indicated by the IMF forecasts for the end of the conflict. However, the budgets for these years even provide for a decrease in defense spending, while increasing spending on peaceful needs, as if only flower meetings were planned in frontline cities.

He noted that Ukraine currently lacks sufficient defense funding, which has been distributed inefficiently. Dubina emphasized that, even taking into account the latest increases, Ukraine needs to invest significantly more in defense, from a trillion to two trillion. Currently, out of the total budget of 6 trillion, only 488 billion is allocated for armaments, which is unacceptable and undermines the public’s trust in the authorities.
