Fine for a roof rack: what is important for a driver to know

Fines for transporting cargo on the roof of a car: what you need to know

Transporting luggage on the roof of a car can be convenient, but it also carries its risks. Drivers can face significant fines for failing to comply with the laws established by the law.

Requirements for cargo dimensions

The cargo being transported must not protrude more than one meter forward or backward from the vehicle’s body. The permissible width with cargo is 2.6 meters, and the maximum height is 4 meters. If these norms are exceeded, the driver risks receiving a fine of 510 hryvnias.

Reliability of cargo fastening

Proper fastening of cargo is a guarantee of safety. If the cargo is not securely fastened, this constitutes a violation of transportation rules, which may result in a fine under the Code of Administrative Offenses.

Visibility and lighting

If the load or the structure of the trunk blocks the view or delays the light of the headlights, turn signals, or brake lights, then this is also a violation. This is especially dangerous when driving at night or in conditions of poor visibility.

Homemade and uncertified trunks

Roofs that were made independently or do not have factory certification require official registration. The only exception is installation on standard roof rails using the appropriate certified accessories.

Roof overload: possible fines

Car manufacturers indicate the maximum permissible load on the roof, which usually ranges from 50 to 75 kg. Here is how the system of fines for overloading looks:

For overloading by 5-10% – 8500 UAH;
For overloading by 10-20% – 17,000 UAH;
For overloading by 20-30% – 34,000 UAH;
For more than 30% overload – 51,000 UAH.
These fines are especially noticeable for summer residents who often have to deal with heavy loads.

How to avoid fines?

To make the trip go smoothly, follow these tips:

Check the weight and dimensions of the cargo.

Make sure that the fasteners are reliable.

Use only certified structures.

Do not block the view and lighting devices.
Regularly monitor the condition of the fasteners.
Following these simple rules will not only help you avoid sanctions but also increase safety on the road.
