7 important rules to protect against infections when swimming in bodies of water

Swimming in bodies of water, whether oceans, rivers, or lakes, carries the risk of infections that can cause serious health problems, ranging from digestive disorders to skin diseases or ear infections.

Fresh and salt water can harbor dangerous microorganisms, especially in areas near settlements or in places where people frequently swim or relax. Heavy rainfall can also negatively affect water quality. That is why it is essential to follow a few simple rules to reduce the risk of diseases.

Wash yourself before and after swimming.

Before entering the water, it is recommended to take a shower to wash off sweat, dirt, and makeup residues so as not to contaminate the body of water. After swimming, you should also wash yourself with soap to reduce the risk of microbes getting on your skin and mucous membranes.

Avoid swimming in unsafe bodies of water.

If you notice an unpleasant odor, garbage, or dead fish nearby, you should refrain from water procedures. Such circumstances can be potentially dangerous to health.

Choose only authorized areas for swimming.

Preference should be given to beaches that have a proven sanitary condition, as the relevant authorities regularly monitor water quality and install appropriate safety signs.

Do not swallow water.

This is especially important for young children, as dangerous microorganisms may enter through the mouth. Ensure that you or your children do not swallow water while swimming.

Keep your hands clean.

After swimming, be sure to wash your hands with soap, especially before eating. If it is not possible to wash your hands, use antiseptics.

Avoid swimming in “blooming” water.

If the water has become green, cloudy, or covered with a film, this may indicate the active reproduction of algae that secrete toxins, which are dangerous to the body.

Do not enter the water if you have broken skin.

If you have open wounds or cuts, it is best to wait until they are completely healed, as infection can quickly enter the body through broken skin.
