USPP: Weakening of anti-corruption bodies in times of war is a serious threat to the state
Business representatives called on the state to prevent political influence on NABU and SAPO. The changes in the legislation approved by the parliament have drawn criticism from the USPP due to the risks to the anti-corruption system.
On their official portal, the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, together with the Anti-Crisis Headquarters for Economic Stability, expressed concern over the adoption of Law No. 4555-IX, which amends the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine regarding investigations into disappearances during wartime. The amendments, which reduce the powers of NABU and SAPO and subordinate them to the Prosecutor General, have raised serious concerns in the business community. The USPP and the Anti-Crisis Headquarters have emphasized that restricting their independence is unacceptable.
“The anti-corruption infrastructure has been built over decades through the joint efforts of international partners and the public. Although its functioning needs improvement, it remains essential for maintaining trust in Ukraine, our course towards European integration, support from allies, and attracting private investment, which is necessary for the country’s recovery,” said Anatoliy Kinakh, President of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Weakening anti-corruption bodies during wartime can negatively affect the country and its economy. Reduced transparency and accountability threaten to lose trust from donors, partners, and the business community.
Combating corruption in wartime is a critical task. Those who profit from wartime are responsible for the damage caused not only to the army but also to the civilian population.
Business representatives appeal to the President, the Verkhovna Rada, and the Government to preserve the independence of anti-corruption bodies, avoid pressure on them, and ensure the effectiveness of the anti-corruption system as an essential condition for joining the EU and restoring Ukraine.
The Union of Ukrainian Businessmen and the Anti-Crisis Headquarters emphasize that the weakening of the independence of the anti-corruption system poses a threat to trust in Ukraine and post-war restoration.
It is worth noting that the Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 12414, which, according to experts, threatens the independence of anti-corruption bodies. This decision caused mass protests across the country, during which thousands of people took to the streets.
