A new pest has appeared in Ukraine, threatening potatoes and tomatoes – more dangerous than locusts

In the Mykolaiv region, in addition to the massive invasion of locusts, another damaging organism has been discovered that can significantly affect agriculture. According to the regional department of the State Service for the Supervision of Food and Consumer Protection, quarantine has been introduced in the village of Shevchenkove due to the detection of the South American tomato moth.

This pest was recorded using pheromone traps during standard inspections conducted by phytosanitary inspectors in the region.

The South American tomato moth has several defining forms: adult butterflies are small, with a wingspan of up to 10 mm, and have a brownish-gray color and characteristic dark spots on the front wings. The caterpillar initially has a creamy-white hue with a dark head, and later acquires a light green color, and closer to the end of development, becomes reddish.

The pest can be transmitted through fresh fruits of tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, as well as with seedlings, soil, packaging materials, or garden equipment. In addition, the tomato moth can spread to new locations with plant residues, damaged plant parts, work clothes, shoes, and containers used during plant transportation or care.

We remind you that recently, the southern regions of Ukraine have suffered a serious invasion of locusts, which damage crops of cereals, vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants, posing a threat to both the agricultural sector and the natural ecosystems of the region.
